How to Tell a Story with Boudoir Portraits

When planning your boudoir session, I always start with inspiration. If you’re not sure what you want your photos to look like - that’s ok! Let’s back up a step and consider if you would like to tell a story with your images.

I love taking a narrative approach to boudoir sessions. Telling a story with your images can be so powerful —and doesn’t have to be complicated. The story can be as simple as “I’m getting dressed up to go out” or “I’m pampering myself before my partner comes home.” A story can revolve around preparation (food, drinks, getting dressed or undressed), or it can be simplified further to “I feel beautiful.” It can even be very complex, such as a villainess plotting revenge against her wrongdoers or a sexy woman in an everyday scene (such as watering the lawn or grocery shopping). While a storyline isn’t required, it can sometimes help inspire everything from wardrobe choices to makeup and setting — and get your creative juices flowing!

At your consultation, we’ll chat about what inspires you, what you’re drawn to, and how you want the photographs to make you feel. These elements are all so important to help bring a theme together and tell a story. We will use styling, sets, and even lighting and posing to help bring the images to life.

Inspiration can include:

  • Your favorite film or song

  • A classic story or fairy tale

  • An experience you’ve had

  • A character you want to embody

  • Your concept of sexiness, power, strength, beauty, or divinity

I’ve had clients bring in elements of Greek tragedies and combine them with a cult classic film and even a color palette to bring something completely unique to life. When I say the sky’s the limit: I mean it! I love customizing your La Photographie Experience to include the elements that make you feel something.

If taking a storytelling approach to your session doesn’t feel like the right fit — that’s ok too! You can literally show up to your session with your favorite wardrobe items and let us work our magic. Of course you’ll want to put thought into what to wear, and I’m happy to help with that! My How to Prepare Guide is rather thorough, and my Wardrobe Guide will help fill in the blanks.
