Reclaiming Self-Love After Perimenopause: Kristie’s Boudoir Transformation
Growing up immersed in diet culture teaches so many of us to look at our bodies through a lens of judgment, constantly seeking flaws to hide or change. Then perimenopause hits, our bodies shift again, and we reach a breaking point where we are simply tired of hiding.
That was the exact crossroad Kristie found herself at when she applied for the All Shapes All Sizes legacy project at La Photographie Boudoir in Stratford, CT. In her initial questionnaire, she expressed what so many women in Fairfield County and beyond feel:
"I’ve been on a healing journey to love & view my body as the sexy goddess that people say I am... After growing up with diet culture modeled at home, I’d been conditioned (like most humans) to see my body through the lens of flaws & things that should be hidden. After perimenopause hit & my body changed yet again, I am finally embracing her with all the self love I can. Would love to be a part of this to show myself and others how being middle aged with curves is amazing."
The Initial Hesitation: Hiding Behind a "Burlesque Uniform"
Even with a strong desire to embrace her body, taking the leap to schedule a session can bring up terrifying hesitation. Kristie’s real journey started by overcoming the deep-seated fear of stepping in front of the lens:
"Although I always wanted to do a burlesque/boudoir shoot, I was terrified when Stephanie accepted me into her project. So much so that I procrastinated scheduling my first prep call. I had no idea what I wanted to wear aside from my ‘burlesque uniform’ for some promo shots. And I had no clue how to start thinking about what else to wear or how to figure it out. And as I tried to figure out what to wear the body insecurities started to creep in."
Her "burlesque uniform" felt safe—it was a armor she knew worked for performance. But beyond the stage look, she struggled to envision how to show up as herself.
Turning Pre-Shoot Anxiety Into Self-Care
During our prep calls, we focused on taking the pressure off completely. Boudoir photography isn't about fitting into a mold; it's a process of guided self-discovery.
"Stephanie was so kind, calm, and patient during our prep calls. She assured me that we had plenty of time to work on my vision & that she would be there with me to help. She said - ‘think of this as a little treat’ & suggested I take time as I could to build out a Pinterest board with anything & everything from a color scheme I liked, or my favorite things, or whatever caught my eye - assuring me that all of the things would help us map out ideas for my shoot.
And the prep turned into a treat for myself, the anxiety started to lessen, & I booked my flights… with so many options packed in my bag - including my burlesque uniform! I told myself that it would be worth it as long as I got some promo shots. I knew I’d like the pics in that because I loved that outfit!"
Designing the Session: Stripping Away the Armor
When analyzing Kristie's questionnaire, she checked off every mood: sexy, luxurious, sultry, flirty, naughty, mysterious, and burlesque-y.
Instead of forcing her to choose between performative glamour and vulnerable intimacy, we mapped out a session concept in our Stratford studio that bridged the two—literally stripping away the performative uniform to reveal the raw beauty underneath.
Set 1 (The Parlour): High-drama burlesque energy featuring her long frilly sheer burgundy robe, black corset, dark hosiery, bold red lipstick, and playful slow-burn posing.
Set 2 (The Boudoir Room): Pure organic sensuality featuring soft nude draped fabrics, pearls cascading across her back, tousled bed-head waves, and light retouching to ensure she looked authentically like herself.
"Once I got to the studio, Stephanie pulled out so many fun ideas for the different sets we used. It was so much fun & I didn’t once feel self conscious or worried about my body. It was a lot of fun & I really enjoyed spending the day with her."
The Picture Reveal: "I Felt Like I Actually Loved Me"
While Kristie came in expecting her costume shots to be her favorites, seeing her unarmored, vulnerable portraits during the reveal created a profound mindset shift:
"When it was time for the picture reveal - I was stunned by the exquisite goddess I saw staring back at me.
And yes, the burlesque costume pics are excellent! I LOVE them & they will be amazing promo shots… but they are not my favorite of the images she captured. In the others, I not only loved the picture but I felt like I actually LOVED ME."
Later, Kristie sent an email following up on her gallery that captured the true heart of this transformation:
"I feel seen in these pictures. And I feel like I actually see myself - the nuances, the energy, the power. Seeing myself without the historic judgement I was taught to view my body & my essence with. There is a joy in me that I didn’t know still existed... The images you’ve captured have made me slightly obsessed with myself!"
